A Christian Warning: Examining Mormonism and the Question of Biblical Truth

Throughout history, Christians have been warned to carefully examine every teaching and compare it with the Word of God. Jesus Himself warned His followers to be watchful and said, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing” (Matthew 7:15).

For many traditional Christians, the rise of Mormonism, officially known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, raises serious questions about scripture, authority, and whether the teachings of Jesus Christ have been changed or added to over time.

One of the biggest concerns is the introduction of additional scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon. Traditional Christians believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and that the message of salvation through Jesus Christ was delivered through the prophets and apostles. They argue that adding new books of scripture creates the danger of moving away from the original message of Christ.

Critics of Mormonism believe that some LDS teachings differ from historic Christian beliefs about God, Jesus, salvation, and the nature of scripture. They argue that Christianity is not meant to be continually rewritten or expanded by new revelations, but faithfully preserved according to the teachings of Christ and His apostles.

Another concern raised by critics is the authority given to modern prophets and church leadership. Traditional Christians often believe that the foundation of the church was established through Jesus Christ and the apostles, and they warn believers to test all teachings carefully against Scripture.

The Bible teaches in Galatians 1:8, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” Many Christians who oppose Mormonism believe this verse is a warning to reject any message they believe changes the original gospel of Jesus Christ.

At the same time, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe they are following Jesus Christ and that their teachings restore truths that were lost. They do not believe they have changed Christ’s message, but rather that they have received additional revelation from God.

The question every believer must consider is this: Are we following the teachings of Jesus Christ as revealed in Scripture, or are we accepting teachings that add to or change the foundation of the original gospel?

Christians are called to study the Bible, pray for wisdom, and test every teaching carefully. Our faith should be built on Jesus Christ, His sacrifice, His resurrection, and the truth of God’s Word.
